The Food and Drug Administration
An Agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

October 18, 2001 Print Media: 301-827-6242
  Broadcast Media: 301-827-3434
  Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA

The Food and Drug Administration today issued the following Public Health Advisory:

FDA PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY:
UPDATE ON USE OF DOXYCYCLINE FOR ANTHRAX EXPOSURE

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson announced on October 17 in testimony before the Committee on Governmental Affairs and Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation and Federal Services of the United States Senate, that the Food and Drug Administration is approving new labeling for the use of several antibiotics to treat anthrax.

The following is being issued to provide healthcare providers with clarification on dosing regimens about doxycycline. In addition, FDA is developing more information about the use of this and other antibiotics to treat anthrax and will provide this information soon.

Doxycycline is approved for the treatment of anthrax in all its forms. The FDA is providing additional information concerning the dosing regimen for the treatment of anthrax, including cutaneous and inhalation anthrax (post-exposure). The currently recommended dosage regimen of doxycycline for severe disease is 100 mg every 12 hours for adults and 1mg per pound (2.2mg per kilogram) every 12 hours for children less than 100 pounds. These dosage regimens are appropriate for use in patients who have been exposed to anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) regardless of the route of exposure.

FDA and other health authorities strongly discourage individuals from taking any antibiotic for prevention of anthrax without the specific advice of a physician and a clear indication that exposure to the organism may have occurred.  FDA News Page

VersaPharm Goes Online

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Contact: Carl Merideth, Vice President
              Sales/Marketing 770-499-8100
              merideth@versapharm.com

The President of VersaPharm Incorporated, R. Joe Ware, today announced the launch of VersaPharm.com on the World Wide Web. The Marietta, Georgia based pharmaceutical company provides cost-effective generic alternative products to underserved markets. They have “accomplished a major goal in making VersaPharm's products and services available 24-hours a day on the new website,” he said.

VersaPharm specializes in the development and marketing of specialty prescription products to be used in the treatment of certain blood disorders, including tuberculosis and hemophilia. The firm created the website not only to provide information via the Internet, but also to allow Authorized Purchasers to buy FDA approved products online.

Mr. Ware said “VersaPharm's goal was to make it easier for patients and health care professional to access information on current therapies, available products, and other resources that will enhance successful treatment outcomes. Although it has taken several months to develop and launch the website, we expect to add new features and additional content on a regular basis.”

Carl Merideth, Vice President Sales and Marketing, explained the website includes product photographs as well as close-up photographs of each type of tablet and capsule for quick identification of VersaPharm products. The site will feature new product announcements, package insert information, and links to other related products.

“As a people-oriented business, we have been excited about developing websites for our customers,” Merideth said. “Just by using the Internet, they can get information easier and faster, without cost, day or night. Now, when customers call to ask how they can get certain information, we are able to tell them, ‘It’s on the website.’  They will find more than fifty pages of helpful information on this website plus links to other websites.”

VersaPharm worked with Darrell Thompson of Photel International for the development and design of multiple websites for the company and its products. Mini-websites were established for eight different product names and two treatment areas: Tuberculosis at tbmeds.com and Hemophilia at hemophiliameds.com. These ten mini-websites are linked to the corporate website, www.versapharm.com, which provides detailed information about each of the products, the company’s management team, corporate policies and how it is now easier to do business with VersaPharm.
